There is something about running with others. The people you sweat with, endure with, and recover with share a special bond. Jona and Brent experienced this over a decade ago when they ran a mountain relay with a group of 10 other people, traversing 180 miles of dirt and asphalt around the Grand Tetons. These relays are challenging, fun adventures with people that may or may not be friends, but always end with deepened bonds.
That is why we are excited to build this event! The Pioneer Mountains, tucked in SW Montana, are full of gems to be discovered (literally). The route starts in Twin Bridges, traverses the Big Hole and Wise River valleys, ascends the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway, tours historic Montana towns, and concludes in Virginia City, the original capital of Montana.

Jona Verreth
Hi, I’m Jona, a Belgian transplant who’s called Montana home since 2005. Two constants in my life since moving here have been running in the great outdoors and connecting with people along the way. Over a decade ago I had the chance to join Brent in the Grand Teton Relay, an unforgettable and rewarding experience.
When the GTR organization decided to call it quits in 2017 we were all quite disappointed, however, ever since that time, I’ve been brewing (over many cups of coffee) to organize a similar event in Montana. After traveling many, many miles over Montana’s backroads, and rekindling some old GTR friendships, we’ve conjured up a unique course, showcasing the best of South West Montana.
By day, I run a lab for the Montana Department of Agriculture, but when I’m not diving into PCR details, you’ll find me investing in family, friends, church and (always) coffee.

Brent Powell
Hey there! I’m Brent, a sometimes-running, outdoors enthusing, media manager. As Jona mentioned, we ran the Grand Teton Relay together. I ran that race with friends and family for 6 years, one of which was an Ultra (6-person) team. There were parts of it that were hard, but what I remember is the bonds of friendship that were always strengthened and the ease of which we signed up each year. Oh, and we sure had fun!
Jona called me up with this idea to establish a similar race in SW Montana. I’ve spent many weekends over the past few years in and around the Pioneer Mountains and I couldn’t agree more that it is perfect for this relay. A great mixture of what Montana has to offer and some gems along the way. I can’t wait for you to experience this part of Montana!
I’m the web & media director for Headwaters Economics in Helena, Husband to a perpetual marathoner, father to two boys, and after reading Jona’s bio, probably in good company with my affection for coffee and company.
